Sunday Run – January 12th 2020

Hello. I can be edited! The nine riders at the Cross this morning could have easily mistaken today’s run for 2020’s edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, with tight bumpy roads, steep ramps and driving rain. There was also a nice bit of wind to make sure we got the full classics experience.

We headed north out of Irvine, but not before we got a lap of the new cycle circuit, sparking debates of a new Summer League Criterium event. The rain lashed us as we left Irvine, but conveniently stopped as we hit Kilwinning, just in time for puncture one of the day. The tyre wasn’t the only casualty of the day, with a CO2 canister taking issue with Heid, leaving him with a nasty looking burn that forced him to abandon shortly after. Out of Kilwinning we hugged quiet country lanes all the way up to Uplawmoor before turning back and climbing up to Dunlop. Some fun and games ensued on the rolling road towards Kilmaurs, Mark Provan narrowly missing out on a silver medal as Colin Broadfoot turned the formers poor choice of gearing into an opportunity to launch an attack. Cafe Rendezvous was the venue for some well earned breakfast on a cold morning. Note the ‘V’ signs in the photo, a nice show of support and solidarity with the resident club vegans.

Fed and caffeinated, we made it and entire forty feet before puncture two of the day, we huddled round Colin to supportively watch, as the Dreghorn Squad invoked the club motto and headed off. Colin received a six out of ten for his repair job. A few more lanes took us to Perceton, where the group was hammered with hail. Back to Drybridge we split, Guy and Mikey taking on Dundonald Hill, as the softer riders rushed back for domestic duty. Anywhere between 35 and 65 miles for members on a great Sunday Run.
